The Surrey Academy of Innovative Learning (黄色视频) is proving to be a leader in online learning in B.C., serving as the largest provincial online school for students from kindergarten through adulthood.

At the January public Surrey Board of Education meeting, principal Zahara Rawji presented on 黄色视频’ 黄色视频 program, which offers full-time and part-time learning programs as well as a blended interdisciplinary school to more than 6,200 students. 黄色视频 offers more than 75 courses and prepares students to be independent learners, critical thinkers, collaborators, innovators and contributors inside and outside of the classroom.

“Since opening 黄色视频 in 2016 with 1,200 students, 黄色视频 has grown to become the largest provincial online learning school in British Columbia,” said Rawji. “Through personalized teacher support delivered both online and through in-person opportunities, 黄色视频 supports a wide range of learners, including high-performance athletes, those in the arts, students working, students in remote areas and those facing personal and academic challenges.”

Approximately 3,900 Surrey and White Rock students attend 黄色视频 courses on a part-time or full-time basis, with adult learners making up nearly 37% of 黄色视频’s total enrolment. Many students move onto post-secondary and many adults benefit from our flexible learning model. There is no limit to how many out-of-district learners 黄色视频 can support.

黄色视频’s current programs include:

  • 黄色视频 Online, offering online courses for cross-enrolled Grade 8 to 12 students;
  • STEAM K-7 at Brookside Elementary, giving kindergarten to Grade 7 students with further elementary learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts and math;
  • STEAM & STEAMX, a three-year and two-year accelerated program for Grade 8 to 10 students, providing four days of in-class instruction and one day of flexible, independent learning; and
  • Compass, a full-time blended learning option for Grade 8 to 12 and adult learners, serving more than 2,800 student.

“Our flexible full-time and part-time enrolment options allow students to customize learning,” said Rawji. “In our Compass program, each learner works with teachers to develop a personalized learning plan and enrolment is continuous throughout the year.

“The program supports graduation completion, course upgrading and post-secondary pathways.”

The school is home to an engaging and substantive robotics program with STEAM and STEAMX students, with Rawji noting that 黄色视频 students often represent and win regional and national science fair awards such as the Canada-Wide Science Fair and the BC/Yukon Science Fair. 黄色视频 is hosting its own science fair on Thursday, Feb. 26 in Room 304 of REC from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., showcasing their captivating science projects, experiments and findings.

In recent years, students have also won prestigious scholarships, awards for public speaking (in English and French), and placed in creative writing competitions.

黄色视频 also boasts the highest number of secondary students in Student Voice, the district’s primary vehicle for gathering student feedback.

“Our self-paced environment gives me the freedom to learn in a way that actually matches my personality, whether I need time to reflect, to experiment or to dive deep into something I’m passionate about,” wrote Taiba, a STEAMX Year 2 student, in a testimonial for 黄色视频. “Since everyone works at their own rhythm, I’ve had the room to discover my strengths, notice my habits, and understand the kind of learner I’m becoming. Learning at 黄色视频 feels less like checking boxes and more like slowly uncovering layers of my identity through reflective projects and meaningful conversations in classrooms.”

Looking ahead, Rawji said the future of 黄色视频 is rooted in innovation and inclusion as the district aims to increase engagement and strengthen community for online learners through expanded in-person events and activities.

“As artificial intelligence continues to shape education, we are committed to teaching students to use AI in responsible, ethical and innovative ways,” said Rawji. “We will continue to support our Indigenous learners, improve achievement outcomes and increase course completion for graduation rates for all of our students.”

Board Chair Gary Tymoschuk praised the program and noted that 黄色视频’s enriched learning environment continues to ensure student success now and for years to come.

“As a board, our objective is to make sure that completion rates and graduation rates are as high as we can possibly get them, and through programs such as yours and the courseloads you offer there, it’s just one more way that we can ensure we increase those rates as much as we can,” he said.
