Principal's Message October 2nd

Hello Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary!

It is a dark and stormy morning out there… Autumn has definitely arrived.  Thank you to all staff, parent and student drivers for your patience and care as you navigated through the extremely heavy traffic this morning.  Please see my note below regarding traffic safety.

It has been a condensed week with Monday’s Pro-D Day and Tuesday’s statutory holiday to recognize our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.  I hope that all Panthers have had a meaningful week of learning and friendship.   We have had another busy week with students and staff focused on their curriculum and hosting special events for our community of learners.

I would like to begin by congratulating our Football program for their successful and very popular “Friday Night Lights” event last week.   We hosted over 1000 people to cheer on the top two Varsity Football teams in the province.  Our Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers played against the Vancouver College Fighting Irish.  It was an excellent game with Lord Tweedsmuir emerging victorious.  Way to go team!  Thank you to the many staff, students and volunteers who worked very hard to organize and host the game.  It was a special evening for our community.

On Monday our staff participated in Professional Development focused on Racial Equity.  We are very proud of our school’s culture of celebrating diversity, equity and a sense of belonging and inclusion for all Panthers.  Our diversity is our greatest strength!

This year our Student Leaders and our Art students have created beautiful and powerful bulletin boards to promote awareness and educate our school community on Truth and Reconciliation.  Great thanks for your thoughtful work!

Wednesday was a fun and special day for our Graduating class with this year’s Grad Boat cruise around the Vancouver Harbour.  It was a very long day, however, the students had a wonderful time.  We managed to avoid the worst of the rain, and our grads were excellent ambassadors for our school.  Great thanks to the staff who volunteered to help supervise throughout the evening.   It was a privilege to be able to celebrate with our Class of 2026!  I am confident that this year’s graduating class will provide the leadership and positivity and work ethic that will shape our community.

Traffic Safety

Traffic around the school during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up continues to be very busy.  We are grateful to all student and parent drivers for following these recommendations, whenever possible, to protect the safety of our students.

  • Students, if possible, please walk and/or bike to school.  A reduction in the number of vehicles attempting to pick-up/drop-off around the school will be very helpful.
  • Parents, if driving your child to school is necessary, please do not enter into the school parking lot.  Drop your child off a couple of blocks away and have them walk the rest of the way to the school.
  • Please do not block our neighbours' driveways when dropping off or picking up your child.
  • Student drivers, please ensure that you have a registered parking pass, and only park your vehicle in the Student lot.  Do not park in the Staff lot.
  • When you are near the school, please drive slowly and carefully, and be alert for students crossing the road.
  • Parents, if driving your child to school is necessary, please avoid the busiest pick-up/drop-off times by arriving before 7:45am and after 2:30pm.

Thank you for your assistance in managing our traffic congestion challenges at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.

I wish everyone a joyful Friday and a weekend of rest and rejuvenation.  See you on Monday!

Ken

Traffic and Student Parking

All Panthers are reminded that traffic around the school and parking on school property will be very busy with our increased enrollment and Extended Day schedule.  All student drivers are reminded that it is very important to drive with care and attention while on or near school property.  Safety is our first priority.  Please drive safely and responsibly, be aware of pedestrians, and follow all traffic regulations.

If possible, all families are asked to consider alternative transportation options.  Please walk or bike to school if possible.  It would also be helpful if students are dropped off a couple of blocks away from the school and vehicles do not enter our school’s parking lot.

Please note that this year, students are only permitted to park in the Student Lot on the right side of our parking lot near our Portable classrooms.  Students are not permitted to park in the Staff Lot.

All students wishing to park on school property must apply for a Parking pass.  Application forms may be picked up at the office.

Parking passes must be displayed on your car’s windshield at all times while on school property.  Parking privileges will be revoked for any students not following our parking regulations or for unsafe driving.

Thank you for your help and cooperation in responding to our increased traffic challenges and protecting the safety of our community members.
